The title is pretty self-explanatory.

My house being the nearest from the street, it serves as relay point for packages destined to anybody living in the grouped habitat, and due to Xmas approaching, i see many.

Oh, I long to speak english, since beeing in London and not able to have a real conversation because my children wouldn't understand a word.
Fortunately the girlfriend of my dad whith whom I am living actually wants to improve her english so I could practise sometime.

Tomorrow is the birthday party of my dad (he lives in Brasil) and since my portugese is not very useful, I hope some guests would be able to speak english with me...

My english is 100% self-taught. I can read it easily, but for writing, it's another story, because i still do many grammatical and syntactic errors, i've even been banished from edition on TVtropes because i did too many errors.

I'm used to writing in english often, for some reason that's how my boyfriend and I have always exchanged by text, even though we speak french out loud (he's french-american this is not entirely out of nowhere :cretin: ). It's much more difficult for me to speak, I think my speech is "ok" but it could be better, I still make silly mistakes because I don't have as much time to think about what I'm saying.

I gave blood yesterday, went to sleep at 1am, I'm about to start my period, and yet for some reason I woke up with more energy than any of the past few days :dunno:
I'm going to pole dance class tonight, I expect to crash right into my bed when I come home

Hey, I'm glad this topic is resurfacing!
English is a big part of my work as a translator, but I only translate to French, so I don't have the opportunity to write as much as I wish in English.
I know I can speak and think in English when I'm with English speakers, but as a non-native, I still make some silly mistakes sometimes. For me, it's part of the learning process so I'm not really ashamed of those, like I won't mock a person who makes the effort to speak in French to me and makes mistakes.
I'm also trying to watch all my films and TV shows from Anglophone countries in VO without subtitles or with English subtitles, I guess it makes it easier with subtitles to learn the grammar and the idiomatic structures.

Oh, that's a great topic ! My English isn't perfect, but I'm working on it and I really enjoy practising. My accent, however, is pretty awful. I've learned a lot thanks to films & TV shows, music, podcasts, interviews and so on. I also use it to talk to my in-laws because I barely speak their language. And since they switch to English to be helpful, it doesn't exactly motivate me to make much more effort :icon_rolleyes: . I used to speak quite a bit of English with my husband at the start of our relationship too, but much less now that he speaks French fluently.

Oops, not sure what I did but I deleted my previous post, sorry !

@Misspoire yes, watching films with English subtitles really helped with my writing and phrasing  .

I also watch films and read books in english to practise, I think it's the mean by wich I learned to be proficient.
I don't speak easily but I can read books on specific subjects and it's useful to do some searching.

Since I like travelling but I could'nt go abroad more than every other five year I'm happy to find other ways of using english, thanks to you this time :bouquet:

Same here, I watch a lot of movies and shows in English (read books too but I don't really read much these days...) usually with English subtitles. I don't always need them but I don't want to scramble to find them in the middle of the episode when a new character with a thick accent I can't understand arrives on screen.
Lately when I'm alone and knit in front of the TV I've been watching a show from New Zealand, I feel like the Kiwi accent is getting easier on my ears but I'm not quite there yet.

I read in English easily but I have more trouble speaking because the words don't come easily or I struggle with pronunciation. I try watching show in English too but I find that without subtitles I seem to understand half of what's said because people speak too fast or without articulating enough and that's frustrating. But I go on trying.

I'm in the train on a professional trip, and feeling soooo tired and sleepy. I'm in the process of destroying a large coffee in the hopes of not missing my stop and ending up 600km too far.
I hope my hotel room has a good mattress.

@Onirinaute finger crossed for you!

I'm temporarily an english instructor for the girlfriend of my father because she is training for a job meeting in english. She wishes to work for a big compagny. Since I'm better at english than her, I volunteer as sparing partner :highfive:

@Portnawak @Onirinaute I still use English subtitles too, because there's always an actor I can't understand in every TV show !

Just got back from dance class. I didn't have time to warm up properly with everyone because I arrived a little late. I'm definitely going to feel it tomorrow :cyclope: . Now it's time for a nice hot shower and then straight to bed ! They're forecasting snow for tomorrow evening, so I'm glad I had better conditions for driving tonight.

@Onirinaute So, how was/is the mattress at your hotel?  :cretin:

I went to my choir practice yesterday, though I had no motivation. It felt good to go there, because we were only 13 (there are 27 people that subscribed this year  :sweatdrop: ) and we actually talked about the desertion of members... I know I will finish the year because I paid for it and I am actually excited about our representation in June, but I don't know if I will continue in September. I've been in the choir for 7 years (well, more like 5 years, minus the year of the covid), so it would be a shame to stop next year, but I am not the only one thinking that... Or maybe it's just that right now, I don't feel motivated for anything (I'm looking forward for spring to be back and days to become longer  )

@Misspoire @Lysae
The bed was ok, but the room was too hot, it woke me up in the middle of the night. Or maybe it was the afternoon coffee ? I had to change my alarm to wake up early for my client meeting and of course I forgot to put my regular alarm back on yesterday night, so this morning I woke up at 9:30... Luckily I had no meetings and I'm working from home.

My spinning wheel and wool fiber were delivered while I was away, so yesterday night I set it up and started spinning ! I'm trying to be patient and remember that it'll take me a lot of practice before I can spin a correct and regular yarn.

@Lysae Is your dad's girlfriend brazilian or fluent in portuguese? I saw your message on the other thread, if she is maybe you can trade english practice for slow, well enunciated portuguese practice ?
Otherwise maybe listening to podcasts on slow speed, the radio (news anchors usually enunciate pretty well), watching local TV with portuguese subtitles on if it's available ? I spent 6 months in Brazil at the end of my studies and barely spoke portuguese because the people I worked with were from lots of different countries, so we ended up speaking english most of the time. I would say for understanding, listening to a lot of native content is great and having the written language at the same time helps when you're starting, but for speaking only practice will help, for better or for worse...

@Onirinaute Yes, she is, we are doing that actually, but me doesn't wanting to bother anyone tends to end by english course only...
I take the oportunity while beeing here to watch TV in portugese with portugese subtitles, it helps.

We are leaving today for another part of the country and will probably do some tourists things in group (going to the lençoìs, it's part of my dream, I saw this white desert with blue puddles in Yann Arthus-Bertrand's pictures), I hope beeing with less people at a time will help speaking with them.
Thanks for the advice, I feel less alone in my strugle :fleur:

Last week I saw the scarf one of my colleagues was knitting and since then I've been pondering whether to buy knitting needles. But I do crochet because I didn't like knitting when my grandmothers taught both methods so I tend to think it won't be a good idea. And then I remember the scarf

@Lysae I just looked up Lençois Maranhenses, lucky you ! It looks incredible !
It makes me want to go back to Brasil to visit more of the country, I haven't been to the Nordeste at all.

@Portnawak I learned to knit when I was little and I was pretty bad at it, but then I picked it up again a couple of years ago and it was way easier than I remembered, and now I love it :cretin: . I got circular needles that I use even on projects that I knit flat, I found them easier to handle than the long straight ones.
I have to say, scarves are not necessarily a great beginner project in my opinion because they take so long and can be boring after a while, something like mittens, a snood or a winter hat might be a better start :fleur: BUT it's also not very motivating to knit something you don't really like just for practice, so if a scarf is really what you want you should go for it

I watched a spectacle at the theater today, it was an activity organized by an association for disabled people. And gosh, that was so boring ! There were 2 people on the scene, with one who said most of the text. He talked really fast and with endless sentences, without doing the effort of making it interesting. It was supposed to deliver a message about misery and refugees crisis, but for me, he totally shoot the message. At one moment, he suddenly say racist things that i would believe that he though what he said if it wasn't the absolute contrary of what he said earlier, because it looked disturbingly like those so-called humorists who do so-called "second degree humor", and knowing that he didn't mean it was not enough to appreciate it in any way. The worst piece i've ever saw since ages, i didn't even applauded at the end.

Hello!  I've just discovered this topic, and since I live in an english speaking country so I'm quite hipped by this ECM but I'm not super sure I will participate much (I've never been to keen about ECM because it goes way too fast for me). Since this one seems more paced I think it could work (until it confuses me to write in english in the burrow... my French is already kinda disapearing).
I had a pretty boring day at work ... But I'm going to watch Hamnet in the cinema now I'm super excited because I looooved the book! If you want to read in English and you can source it in the original language I 1000% recommend it! It's easy to read and the story it great!

Just a small point, @Merlu we say "people with disabilities" (personne porteuse de handicap) and not "disabled people" (handicapé) it's more respectful...  Sorry you found the play borring though...
